Introducing Facebook Places
written: August 18, 2010Well, it is offical, Facebook annouced Facebook Places tonight entering the geolocation based application game. It seems as though the newest iPhone app and Facebook Touch will now have the ability to check-in to places around where you are. This should feel comfortable to anyone that uses FourSquare, Gowalla, BrightKite, or any of the other checkin based apps out there.
What is interesting, however, is Facebook’s acceptance of the people aready in the game. It seems as though they have partnered up with companies that have already built a userbase (mostly FourSquare, Gowalla and Yelp) and have integrated these apps into Facebook Places. I feel this is the best we could have hoped for in this already crowded space. We didn’t need Facebook coming into an already crowded niche and trying to overtake FourSquare for supreme checkin-ship.
Facebook Places is definitely still young, but I feel that Facebook really did the geolocation market a favor with how they implemented this. Only time will tell, but Facebook Places puts geolocation on the map for all of Facebook’s 500 million users; that is impressive. What are your thoughts?
